People often buy miniature Eiffel towers or figurines or something similar as souvenirs when travelling abroad. My acquisitions consist mainly of two kinds of items: Disney comics in local language and CDs of local progressive rock. They didn’t seem to have Donald Duck comics translated to Hebrew, so I bought only some prog records:
I did some searching in the net before the trip and had names for some bands and albums to look for, as well as addresses to three record shops. The map for the center of Tel Aviv I got from the hotel didn’t have names for smaller streets, so I could find only two of the streets. The place on the Dizengof street would have been a kilometer away, so I only got to the shop on Sheinkin street.
Asking the salesman for advice, we picked two of the albums on my list, with him highly recommending them as classics of Israeli prog. Then he told me he can find me something better than the third item on my list – I listened to the CD by Lebanon and liked it. So, in the end I got the following:
Orphaned Land is progressive metal, Lebanon is instrumental prog rock and Shlomo Gronich album is .. well, harder to describe, it’s something more peaceful, with a child choir. After playing them through once, they all seem to be interesting albums!
