Iaito

From the beginning of this year I’ve been practising iaido with iaito, a sword made especially for iaido practise. It’s just like a real katana in everything but the sharpness and material of the blade, which is made of zinc/aluminium alloy instead of steel. The blade is not sharp for obvious safety reasons – if it was, most of iaidoka would lack some fingers.

Length of the blade is 2.50 shaku, which is slightly less than 76cm. The actual length of the whole sword, from the point of kissaki to the kashira is 104cm. , and the weight of the sword is about 945g.

After two years of practising with bokken, handling iaito feels quite different, the greater weight being the main difference. Iaido is even more fun with a sword!
