Cold

The real winter has arrived. Since Tuesday the temperature’s been around -28°C here in Oulu and occasionally below -30°C. At last, a chance to use the goose down parka and other cold weather gear that hasn’t been out of closet often. This evening the meter in front of the main post office showed only -25°C (maybe it’s not insulated well enough from the building?):

I’ve been walking the 2-3km route from work back home every afternoon, and found out that a balaclava made of windstopper fleece or a similar material might be useful. Nose and cheeks feel pretty cold after a while – or rather, they don’t any more.

Finnish Meteorological Institute has a nice little JavaScript tool showing the effect of wind in sub-zero temperatures. We’re hanging on the border of frostbite danger zone here in the windy city of Oulu with temperatures like this.
