The trip started well. First from Oulu to Tervola, where we switched to bigger car and continued to Rovaniemi. It was quite hot and sunny day to drive over 500km, but we made it easily to the supermarket we usually shop. At that time we didn’t realize the true meaning of the ad they had near the entrance:
After packing all the food into the car we drove on. Before Sodankylä we decided to stop and gather some birch branches for making a “vasta” for use in sauna, since there are only a few birch trees on the island.
It was hot and sunny all the time. Entering the car after a break in Sodankylä we found out how hot it actually was – it smelt like sauna because of the birches, and the leaves were turning brown in the heat:
Then we continued to Kaunispää, which is always a nice place to take a break.
Somewhere after Sodankylä we started seeing reindeer on the road. They desperately tried to find an open, windy space, since they had swarms of insects around them.
While packing our stuff into the boat the mosquitos came. Big swarms of them. Rowing to the island was no problem, and we tolerated them outside. But they were inside, too.
We’re leaving to Muddusjärvi today. According to the weather forecast it’ll be warm, +25C in Ivalo today. Not the best possible weather for sitting in a car.
In Tervola there was a lot of mosquitos – we’ll soon find out the situation in Inari.
