Finncon 2004

This year Finncon was arranged on 10.-11.7. in Jyväskylä. I wasn’t familiar with the works of any of the authors who were present as guests of honour. The sci-fi program was also less interesting than last year (no Star Trek subjects ;-). Or maybe the Animecon progam felt more interesting?

Anyway, here’s some notes from the Finncon side of things. The first lecture I saw was Marianne Leikomaa’s “Aku Ankka ja science fiction”, which was mainly statistics of sci-fi elements in Aku Ankka magazines. Here’s a photo:

That was also the only Finncon lecture I attended on Saturday. In the evening there was “Heaven and Hell” masquerade party in Ilokivi. Anime cosplayers ruled the daytime, but there wasn’t many of them here – obviously most of them are a lot under 18.

Clockwise, from top left: Vampirella (who won the contest), a Romulan, Edward Scissorhands and the Addams Family (who was the only contestant in the group competition and won it (surprise..)).

On Sunday I regrettably missed Suvi Niinisalo’s “Keijut suomailaisissa kuvissa ja mytologiassa” :-( and attended Gwyneth Jones’s guest of honour speech (she’s one of the authors I didn’t know, but her speech about fairytales and fantasy was pretty interesting) and Osmo A. Wiio’s “Science Fictionista tietotekniikkaan” which had some interesting parts but could have been called “Wiio’s role in the history of computers and telecommunication”..

All good things end too soon, and this Finncon seemed to be over in a few hours, and it’s two years to the next one. Here’s a photo of the closing ceremony:
