A tour in Tervola center

Welcome for a photo tour in Tervola center. It’s a sunday afternoon and raining quite a lot, so don’t forget your umbrella.

I haven’t had a good look around there for years, so there were a few surprises for me, too.. There’s close to 30 photos in this entry, so on the main page select the link below to see the rest.

We start in the southern end of the town center, at the bridge over Jurvanoja, and continue north. Jurvanoja is not a river, even if it may look like one; it’s a lot wider here than half a kilometer upstream. It flows to the Kemijoki, which is a real river. The fountain is a recent addition, and I had no idea that there was a harbour for boats until now.

This yellow building by the Jurvanoja is Tervola health center:

This is the main street in the front of the health center. The first photo shows the street northwards, towards the town center, and the second one to the opposite direction.

The heraldic animal in the Tervola coat of arms is the crane (holding an onion in it’s beak). That’s probably the reason for decorating the building on the other side of the street from town hall with crane reliefs. The building in the middle photo is the town hall itself (calling “kunnanvirasto” a town hall may not be accurate but what the heck..). The statue is in the front of town hall.

The next photos show the main street northwards in the front of town hall and the “shopping center”. The shopping center is visible also on the right side of the main street picture.

Did you notice the crane again?

On the other side of the street we see a bar which could use some new paint. There’s another building right next to it. Take a look at the sign on the door!

“Lukio” is, of course, “high school” (equivalent) in Finnish. No, I didn’t go to high school next to Polar-baari. I was told that the real high school building is being repaired and some of the classes were being held here.

The next photos show the building complex with a pizzeria, pharmacy and some offices, and the view southwards along the main street from next to it.

In the next two photos the first one shows a bank and some other buildings by the main street and the second one shows the most famous restaurant (as in entertainment, I have no idea about their food) in Tervola, the Ravintola Kultakurki (“kurki” is “crane” in Finnish..). If some band is playing in Tervola, this is the most likely place.

The next four photos show Tervolan yläaste (“junior high school” equivalent). I haven’t seen it this close for 10 years or so. It wasn’t this colourful in my time, I can only remember red bricks and gray concrete. Now they’ve used actual paints to decorate it.

The library is on the other side of the same building. There’s a new monument in the front of the library. The sign says “Paasilinna”, but I think there’s several authors with that name..

This is the “Kemijoen itäpuolentie” road by the yläaste. The first photo shows the view southwards, towards Kemi, and the second one to the opposite direction, towards Rovaniemi. The real Tervolan lukio is about 200 meters northwards, by the fire station. あそこにいきませんでした, ごめん.

The next photo shows the street going towards the town center from the crossing above. The white building in bad shape is the old hardware store. It’s actually on the other side of the street from Kultakurki, so we made a little circle here.

That’s about it, thanks for attending. If you’re from Tervola and spotted any awful mistakes, feel free to add corrections in comments (suomeksikin käy).
